The greatest advantage of the cooperative study programme is the fact, that its students spend one year each at both partnering universities. The usual length of study amounts to at least four semesters (= two years) overall. During their time in the programme, German and Italian students mostly spend the courses together, thereby gaining the chance to connect and make their BiBoG-stint a truly transnational one.

German BiBoG-students usually being with their studies at Bielefeld University. In their first semester the curriculum (see attached table) comprises not only courses in history but also language training seminars and a healthy amount of cultural preparation courses, which are intended to help the students settle into their new surroundings once they make the trip to Bologna – usually in their second semester with the intent to stay at the Alma Mater Studiorum for a year (i.e. two semesters). Typically, the fourth semester is spent back at Bielefeld University where the students complete their master’s thesis. The structure is similar for Italian students with only slight differences concerning the schedule. They start in Bologna and spend the full first year there before they move to Bielefeld and complete their studies there.
